The 120th Pope
Anastasius III
Pope Anastasius III, the 120th Pope
Pope Anastasius III (911-913) – He would reign as pope for only two years and, as expected, there is little recorded regarding his term as pope. The domination of the noble family of Theophylact overshadowed this and other successive popes as well. One position held by the head of that family was that of financial director of the Holy See. It is noted that he consecrated a bishop and that apparently, he concurred with his predecessor, Pope Segius regarding the marriage (his fourth) of Emperor Leo VI. This stand caused a renewed rift between the pope and the patriarch of Constantinople.
At his death, he was interred in the Basilica of Saint Peter.
