The Twenty–Seventh Pope
Saint Eutychian
Pope St. Eutychian (275-283) – The reign of Pope Eutychian occurred from beginning to end at a time of peace for the Church. The year following his death, however, marked the start of the virulent persecution of the Church by the Emperor Diocletian. It is believed that the lack of verifiable information regarding the activities of Pope Eutychian is due to the destruction wrought by the persecution.
One might construe from the expansion of the Christian cemeteries in Rome during the time that the reign of Pope Eutychian saw an increase of Church membership in Rome.
Pope Eutychian is the last of the popes to have been interred in the cemetery of Callistus.
